Fitting exercise into your daily life seems to move lower and lower on your to do list and often disappears all together as the preparation for Christmas seems to take over. The combination of an increased household work load, short daylight hours and possibly a rise in boozy nights out (And subsequent morning fuzzy heads !) make it tricky to motivate yourself to get out on that run, cycle, gym or attend that class.
One of the best things we can do for ourselves to keep the stress levels down is to work out. Those endorphins that are released not only keep us happy but allow us to cope with all the extra pressures that come along over the festive period. And, of course, let’s not forget that it can help to balance out those extra calories that seem to be sneaking in everywhere.
I think you do have time to fit in some exercise – IF you can move it up in your priorities list !
If you’re still reading this then it looks like you do want to make exercise a priority so here’s some ideas that can help you to make it happen:-
· Don’t try and find time, instead take time from somewhere that’s not as important, such as that 30 minutes on social media !
· Can you turn your commute into a workout ?
The commute presents an ideal opportunity to squeeze in a fitness hit, even in the winter. It does require a bit of prep though, so think through the logistics and plan it in. Once you’ve done it a couple of times it’ll be much easier. Even if your commute is not that far you can add an extra challenge in – maybe go a circuitous route or if you’re cycling add some paniers for extra weight !
· Be flexible. Whilst you may not be able to fit in all of your regular sessions this month do consider HIIT (High intensity interval training). A group HIIT class can be easily slotted in at lunchtime and you’d still have time for a shower. Can’t make it to an organised class – no problem. Most sequences can be completed in less than 15 minutes and often don’t require any kit so can be done nearly anywhere that suits you. There are heaps of great apps that’ll keep you on track.
· Get up a little earlier. Just half an hour can be enough to start the day with an energising work out. If you’re not an early bird then this may sound awful to you. Remember it’s not everyday. There are some pointers that can help you too – prepare the things you need the night before so it’s easy to get going even if you’re not yet thinking clearly.
· Accept that some days it’s just not going to happen. Don’t beat yourself up about it. Relax and enjoy the festivities. There’s always tomorrow.
Just a little planning can make all the difference.
